Mary Lilley started Greenfield in 1998 after 17 years of economic development experience with local and regional organizations in NC. Robin Spinks joined her in the business in 1999, after 22 years of varied economic development experience from a wide geography – with a major site consulting firm, as a local developer and as a project manager with a company developing new projects.
Mary and Robin met in 1984, while each was the local developer in adjacent counties in Eastern NC. Robin was new to the territory and needed to understand the area’s agricultural heritage. Mary taught her agriculture 101, based on her many years of exposure to the family farming business, and taught her about soil conditions and how they impact site development in Eastern NC. Robin shared knowledge about the site selection process, learned at the engineering consulting firm. They became friends while passing prospects back and forth during visits to similar buildings, and while attending NCEDA meetings together, as two of the very few women in attendance during the early years. They discussed working together for many years before the opportunity presented itself.
Mary and Robin have shared other endeavors as well, including ownership of a minor league baseball team, and an investment in Local Motors, a startup co-creation platform and vehicle production company.
Mary and Robin have been business partners for many years, and friends even longer. They respect each other’s diverging opinions and creative insight, and value each other’s different perspectives.
